Turning Something I Couldn’t Wear Into Something She Could
I originally bought this green striped set during my last pregnancy because I wanted something loose and comfortable. Afterward, it was much too big on me, so I listed it on Poshmark — where it sat for quite a while without selling.
Eventually, I decided I’d rather do something with it myself.
I still loved the fabric, and once I started sewing more, I kept thinking about how cute it would be turned into a little outfit for my toddler. So I took it down, cut into it, and gave it a completely new life.
Figuring Out What I Could Make
I knew I wanted to make a simple matching set, so I worked with the fabric I had and planned out a top and elastic-waist shorts.
Because I was starting with an existing outfit instead of fresh yardage, I had to pay more attention to where I placed each piece and how much usable fabric I actually had.
That made the project a little more interesting than starting with fabric from the store.
Making the Top
For the top, I kept the shape simple and loose.
I added straps and small tie details, and I liked that the vertical stripes gave the whole thing enough personality without needing anything too complicated.
Turning the Pants Into Shorts
The long pants gave me plenty of fabric to work with for the bottoms, so I turned them into a pair of elastic-waist shorts.
I kept them relaxed and comfortable, and I liked being able to reuse so much of the original fabric instead of letting it go to waste.
The Finished Set
Once I put the top and shorts together, I was really happy with how the outfit turned out.
It still feels connected to the original set because of the fabric, but it looks completely different now.
What had been sitting unsold on Poshmark ended up becoming something my toddler can actually wear — which feels like a much better ending for it.
Giving It a Second Life
This project made me realize how differently I look at clothes now that I’m sewing more.
Something that doesn’t fit anymore doesn’t always have to be donated, sold, or forgotten in the back of a closet.
Sometimes it can just become something else.
And I think that might be one of my favorite parts of learning to sew.
