How to Make Scrunchies: A Few Things I’ve Learned

When I started making scrunchies, I kept looking up the same information over and over again — fabric sizes, elastic lengths and how much fullness I wanted.
Eventually, I started writing everything down so I could stop searching for the same measurements every time I sat down to sew.

The Three Things I Pay Attention To
For me, the biggest differences come down to:
Size — smaller for little ponytails, larger for a fuller statement look
Fabric — lightweight cotton, linen blends and soft woven fabrics all behave a little differently
Elastic — the length and width can completely change how snug the finished scrunchie feels
Once you find a combination you like, write it down. It makes the next one so much easier.

A Few Tips That Helped Me
Make one test scrunchie before cutting a whole batch.
Prewash fabric when shrinkage could be an issue.
Press as you go for a cleaner finish.
And don’t be afraid to adjust the fabric or elastic until the scrunchie feels right for you.
Why I Made a Scrunchie Making Guide
After keeping all these little notes for myself, I eventually turned them into a printable Scrunchie Making Guide with the tutorial, sizing, fabric and elastic references all together in one place.
I also made a bonus Quick Reference Poster so the most useful information can stay right beside your sewing machine.
If that sounds helpful, you can find the printable guide in my Etsy shop.
Happy sewing ♡
